Xplornet
Pulls Out of North Algoma

revised 02 Apr 08
Xplornet, a wholly owned subsidiary of the
Barrett corporation,
recently informed the north Algoma communities of Hornepayne and Wawa that
effective 30 Apr 08 Xplornet fixed wireless broadband Internet service would no
longer be available in the communities. Xplornet has operated fixed
wireless access in the area since 2005. There is no word on any impact on
service to Dubreuilville.
Xplornet indicated that there was “…
insufficient market demand to continue to provide fixed wireless services…”
This action will leave Hornepayne with
only dial-up access for the ordinary residential user. The MUSH (Municipal,
University, Schools and Hospital) sector and commercial users will still be able
to acquire access through the Ontera operated SAP (Service Access Point)
established several years ago as far of an ADnet managed and NOHFC/FedNor funded
project. The SAP is nearing the end of its useful life and will need replacement
with upgrades in the near future.
Wawa is hit less severely because it has
Shaw, Bell and Ontera offering various degrees of alternate services to the
municipal core areas. In addition, it is also on the deferral account list to
expand Bell DSL access to Hawk Junction and Michipicoten FN (subject to their
consultation and approval) once the legal problems are resolved. In all cases,
users not living within the DSL and cable service areas will lose access as well
as will all rural subscribers.
This is confirmation
of the position routinely expounded by ADnet in its presentations that the
private sector service providers are profit driven and if they cannot make that
profit, they will pull out or not provide service initially.
ADnet continues to work
with the north Algoma communities and the Northeast Mayors Group to acquire full
broadband access to the communities and associated rural areas.
